SUMMARY:

This book was published in 2010 by Picture Window Books. It is part of a series of beginner's chapter books. They all share the stories about a girl named Katie Woo. She is Chinese American and has 2 best friends Pedro and JoJo.

In this book it rains so much that Katie Woo, her family, and also everyone else including her friends Pedro and Jojo must leave their house and take shelter at the high school's gym. Katie feels strange having to spend the night there and wonders if it will ever stop raining.

DEVELOPMENTAL VALUE:

This book would be a great way introduce children to the weather, and also a good way to talk to children about natural disasters, such as floods. Once again, I love that this book depicts a Chinese American as the main character. Also, her friends Jojo who is an African American girl and his friend Pedro, who is a Mexican American boy are also representing minority races; this adds to the diversity of this book. This sends children a subtle message that race boundaries do not exist in friendship.

Each page features illustrations and big easy print, which makes it perfect for early readers. Also included at the end of each book is a glossary of words, 3 discussion questions and 3 writing prompts.
