SUMMARY:

This book was published in 2008 and it is about a girl named Grace. Grace is shocked when her teacher reveals that the United States has never had a female president, so she decides to be the first. She starts off her political career by running for president in her school's mock election. Her popular opponent Thomas Cobb claims to be the "best man for the job" and soon she realizes that she has entered a tough race.

DEVELOPMENTAL VALUE:

This book is very colorful and is great and fun resource we can use in the classroom to help children understand the electoral system. In this book, the author creates a simple environment and situations that children can relate to. DiPucchio also sends children a very clear message letting them know that each of them is strong, independent, and can be anything they want to be. "If you play fair, you win fair" is another message included in this book. This teaches children that hard work pays off at the end.

Today in our society, I think it is extremely important to help children understand how beautiful and diverse our world is. Diversity is expressed heavily throughout this book, not through the text but through the illustrations. This book incorporates children from many different backgrounds and ethnicities, which helps the story seem even more realistic by depicting the world just as it is outside this book.

AGE RANGE:
